Gonigs and Appalachian Trail Conservancy Collaborated on a GIS-Based Project to Promote Trail Access
Between August 11-13, 2021, Gonigs partnered with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) to organize the Emerging leaders Summit (ELS). The 3-day summit includes equity maps sessions that will leverage the power of GIS to provide insight into patterns of inequality across ATC communities.
The Summit brings together young leaders across the nation and around the world for virtual workshops, networking events, and more! We partook in an equity mapping case study session, “Equity Mapping Case Studies for Creating Community Change,” that brought together a diverse set of professionals including John Evangelista, Christen McNamara Watts, Oforiwaa Pee Agyei-Boakye, and Lucy Crespo.
In addition to that, Gonigs coordinated an GIS data training sessions to help participants build GIS maps and tell stories using story maps. The participants learnt the basics of GIS and Story maps. The Geographic Information System (GIS) 101 and Storymapping 101 were supported by Will Tollefson and Andrew Joyner of East Tennessee State University (ETSU). Both sessions gave participants an intro course to the world of mapping and geospatial sciences with real-life examples.
